Phra Chudhadhuj Ratchasthan Palace Museum

พิพิธภัณฑ์พระจุฑาธุชราชฐาน เกาะสีชัง

Built in 1889 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Phra Chudhadhuj Ratchasthan Palace, the only palace in Thailand that is located on an island and was used as a resort residence for the King and royal family members until the French-Siamese war in 1893 A.D.. The major buildings were dissembled before being relocated and assembled at other locations on the verge of the war in 1892, when the usage of the palace by the royal family has ceased.

In 1978, the Treasury Department granted Chulalongkorn University a permission to establish Sichang Marine Science Research and Training Station (SMaRT) on part of the estate.  The university subsequently carried out restoration of the palace in 1990 in conjunction with Department of Arts.

Since 2002 the university has assumed sole financial responsibility in restoring and maintaining the premises, when it founded Phra Chudhadhuj Ratchasthan Palace Museum and other service areas for public historical tourism.

On January 12, 2004, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of the museum, which is now open to the public daily from 9:00-17:00 Hrs., except Mondays.  There are approximately 250,000 visitors each year.

Asdangkhanimitr Temple

King Chulalongkorn had the temple constructed in 1892 to replace the Plai Laem Temple, with an ordination hall of the temple built in a circular in shape and surmounted with a Ceylonese-style pagoda.  The unique features of this hall are its Gothic-styled doors, windows, and stained glass.

The Wooden House by the Sea

The house was built in the reign of King Chulalongkorn, though the exact year of its construction is still unknown.  It may have been a resort house for foreign residents before it was renovated into a residence of Thai royal family members when the King had medical retreat on Si Chang Island before PhraChudhadhuj Ratchasthan Palace was built in 1892.  It is currently used as Tourist Information Office and a venue for exhibitions.
