Division of Art and Cultural Development and Promotion is accountable for developing and promoting art and cultural activities in accordance with the university’s policy and strategy.  The responsibility includes creating, collecting, and disseminating body of knowledge of Thai classical music and dance, Western music and dance, and other artistic and cultural valuables.  The office coordinates and supports Thai classical ensemble of the university, Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra, and other classical music ensembles.  It also manages Thai Music Library, Music Hall, Chula Dharma Center, and handles other related tasks assigned by the university.


Chulavatid Ensemble

Chulavatid is a Thai classical music ensemble composed of current students and alumni.  The ensemble appears regularly in Piphat Dukdambam concert on Chulalongkorn University Foundation Day on the 26th of March every year, in which Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn would regularly take part.  Chulavatid also carries out notation of Thai classical music literatures to preserve this national treasure.

Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra

Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra under the patronage of Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra was established in 1989, and currently operates from CU Symphony Orchestra Office on the 6th floor, Chamchuri 9 Building.  The Orchestra performs classical concerts every year with the body of members comprising current students, alumni, and some professional musicians.  The orchestra functions under Directing and Operating Committees with Asst. Prof. Col. Choochart Pitaksakorn, National Artist and Artist of Chulalongkorn University as Music Director.

Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra has branched out in smaller ensembles under the same umbrella.  These ensembles are Chulalongkorn University Concert Choir, Chulalongkorn University String Orchestra, Chulalongkorn University Chamber, and various other ensembles.  Each ensemble has different missions and natures of activities.  Concerts by all ensembles, music festivals, workshops and masterclasses see over 20 events each year.

Thai Music Library

Thai Music Library, located on the 3rd floor of Art and Culture Building, provides resources of knowledge of Thai classical music, from which visitors can search for recording, photographs, videos, and books, through the search application.  Collections in the library can be retrieved for educational purposes.  Visitors can duplicate non-copyrighted materials.  The library also houses Thai Musical Instrument Museum and rotating exhibition hall that curates interesting topics, and organizes discussions and academic projects throughout the year.
