Princess Dara Rasami Commemoration Day at Daraphirom Palace Museum

Daraphirom Palace is formerly a residence of the late Princess Dara Rasami, princess consort of King Chulalongkorn.  She contributed greatly in developing Chiangmai, her hometown, in the areas of religion, music and dance, modern agriculture, and education.

Chulalongkorn University acquired the palace from the princess’ heirs and has since committed to upkeep the premise.  After restoring the palace, the university re-opened it as a historical museum for the public, with the purpose for the people to gain insight into the princess’ contribution to the development of the society.  The university also aims for the museum to be a center that dedicates to art and cultural continuity, and societal and economic growth of Lanna (Upper Northern Region of Thailand).

Princess Dara Rasami Commemoration Day is organized annually on December 8th-9th with these following activities and purposes:

  1. Traditional and religious ceremonies, including worshiping ceremony and merit making dedicated to the late princess, to create awareness of the princess’ contribution to Lanna, and as a result, to the country.
  2. Activities for the distinctive Lanna art and culture continuation, including music and dance performances by students and other Chiangmai communities, and Lanna craft workshops.
  3. OTOP marketplace as an outlet to support the government’s local entrepreneurship stimulus program, to increase local revenue and create ownership of the local products.

In organizing Princess Dararasmi Day event, Chulalongkorn University collaborate with local private and government organizations, including City of Chiangmai, eight municipalities, schools, Tourism Authority of Thailand (Chiangmai Office), Public Relations Office (Region 3, Chiangmai).
