The exhibit “150th Anniversary of H.M. King Chulalongkorn’s Visit to India” is organized in memory of His Majesty’s visit to India in the year 1872 AD, the second visit to foreign countries during his glorious reign which took place when the young king was only 19 years of age.
There was a significant reason why the destination of this visit had to be India. Initially, the young king desired to visit Europe with the purpose to learn of the modernization of the western world, in order that he could apply with the development of Kingdom of Siam. However, the king being very young and the distance to Europe being very far away, the Regent agreed to let him visit only India, which was then under the British Raj and was supposed to have been westernized and modernized to some extent.
This exhibit will take you through the trace of His Majesty’s visit, together with his companions comprising of princes, ministers, officers and chamberlains, mostly young in age. The tour will cover his route chronologically, as well as explain the developments in Siam which were supposed to be the result from this royal visit.
The exhibition is organized by an affiliation of Office of Art and Culture; International Relations Department, Faculty of Political Science; South Asian Studies Center; and Indian Studies Center, Chulalongkorn University
